When planning a wedding, many couples assume that fresh flower petals are the only natural option for their confetti moment. In fact, we've recently spoken to several couples who have been advised that only fresh petals can be used at their venue.

The good news is that both fresh petals and dried petal confetti are natural and biodegradable. However, they behave very differently when it comes to preparation, storage, photography and clean up.

As fourth generation Shropshire farmers and specialists in natural petal confetti for over 20 years, we thought we'd explain the differences to help couples and venues make an informed choice.

What Are Fresh Flower Petals?

Fresh petals are exactly what they sound like, flower petals that have been recently picked and separated from the flower head.

They're natural, biodegradable and have long been used for celebrations and weddings. However, because they contain moisture, fresh petals have a relatively short lifespan once picked.

To look their best, fresh petals typically need to be prepared and used on the day of the wedding or the day before. Left for too long, they can begin to wilt, bruise or discolour, particularly during warmer weather.

What Is Dried Petal Confetti?

Dried petal confetti is made from real flower petals that have been carefully preserved.

At Shropshire Petals, we grow many of our flowers on our family farm in Shropshire. Our smaller petals are naturally dried, while our larger petals are freeze dried to help retain their shape and colour.

The result is a beautiful, natural confetti that's lightweight, biodegradable and ready to use whenever you need it.

Fresh vs Dried Petals: The Key Differences

Preparation and Storage

One of the biggest differences is flexibility.

Fresh petals need to be prepared close to the wedding day and used quickly to maintain their appearance. This can create extra pressure for couples, florists and venue teams, particularly during busy wedding seasons.

Dried and freeze dried petals can be prepared well in advance without losing their colour or quality. They can be placed into confetti cones, baskets or sachets ahead of time, making wedding morning preparations that little bit easier.

Clean Up After the Confetti Throw

Venues understandably need to consider how confetti will be cleared after celebrations.

Because dried petals remain light and dry, they can be cleared quickly using a brush, leaf blower or hoover. They don't become compacted in the same way that fresh moisture pack petals can.

Many venues appreciate the simplicity of cleaning up dried petal confetti, particularly when hosting multiple weddings and events throughout the season.

Pathways and Outdoor Areas

Fresh petals naturally contain moisture. Depending on weather conditions and foot traffic, they can become damp once they're on the ground.

Dried petals remain lightweight and dry, helping to reduce damp residue on pathways and hard surfaces while making post-wedding clean-up straightforward.

Wedding Photography

Both fresh and dried petals can create beautiful confetti photographs, but they behave slightly differently in the air.

Because dried and freeze dried petals are so lightweight, they often stay airborne for longer, creating those magical confetti-filled photographs that couples love.

The petals flutter and drift naturally, helping photographers capture stunning images from multiple angles.

Are Dried Petals Still Natural?

Absolutely. A common misconception is that dried petals are somehow less natural than fresh petals. In reality, our petals are simply real flower petals that have been carefully preserved.

Our confetti is:

  • 100% natural
  • Fully biodegradable
  • Free from artificial dyes and preservatives
  • Grown and produced on our Shropshire farm

Once used outdoors, the petals naturally break down over time.

Why Many Venues Choose Dried Petal Confetti

Over the years, we've supplied petal confetti to hundreds of wedding venues across the UK.

Many choose dried and freeze dried petals because they combine natural beauty with practical benefits. They offer flexibility for wedding preparations, create beautiful photographs and can be easily cleared after celebrations.

Of course, every venue has its own policies and requirements, and we always recommend couples check their venue's confetti guidelines before their big day.
