Wedding Traditions - Keep them or Lose them?

As the Gen Z and Millennials approach an age of marriage, you often see a lack of traditional wedding trends. They are renowned for their ability to make change happen. From politics to equality, this generation have instigated a revolution and their take on weddings is making an ever changing, positive impact on the industry.

A new era has arrived, weddings are now filled with DIY décor, biodegradable flower petal confetti and outdoor street food vendors instead of your traditional sit-down meal.

So, this leaves us questioning... are age-old wedding traditions still relevant in the modern era?

Venue

Traditionally, all weddings have been hosted in a place of worship and an elopement was not the 'done thing'.

These days, couples like to express their personalities in a way that best represents them, whilst still embracing tradition through their own interpretation. Venues have evolved throughout the years from the religious places of worship to meet the dreams and imagination of couples, including exotic escapes, repurposed barns and even modern specialist-built locations.

Dress

What is clear across a variety of different retailers is that brides are not looking for traditional wedding dresses anymore - they seek something that has a unique feel about it or is more casual than a conventional bridal gown.

Trends have varied throughout the years. Whilst some brides choose to honour an elegant white wedding dress, or in some cultures a sparkling red gown - Millennials/Gen Z have sourced dresses that range from short and sweet to long and silk. Detering from the traditional long and modest gown and embracing the modernistic simplistic and ivory trends.

From veils to pearl headbands, some traditional gowns are now coming back in to style - inspired by celebrities such as Ellie Goulding, who showcased a wonderful 1940s inspired gown during her 1920s wedding, which was then followed by an elegant silk gown.

Food

Most guests will expect to get fed when you invite them to celebrate your big day. From a sit-down meal or a buffet, to an outdoor street vendor offering a variety of different food options. Throughout the years, food trends and options have varied from the simplistic and elegant to the weird and wonderful.

The modern newlyweds have veered away from the generic sit-down meal and quite often opt for wacky outdoor street vendors such as Pizza Oven vans, Street Food vans and the oh so popular Prosecco carts!

Will you be sticking to tradition - or moving with the times?

Flowers and Confetti

57% of couples will choose fresh flowers for their big day, while another 20% will opt for artificial flowers and 23% for the rustic Dried Flowers. Artificial flowers are not only bad for the environment but have also been a trend for centuries. Percentages show that more newlyweds opted for fresh flowers - demonstrating the urge for a sustainable and more eco-friendly events industry.

Plus, don't you just love the scent and aesthetic of fresh flowers?

From tacky glitter to non-recyclable foil confetti, we urge all of our soon to be newlyweds to opt for a biodegradable and sustainable alternative for their big day. Throughout the years, couples have thrown all sorts of confetti that have since been disallowed by venues and frowned up on for the lack of eco-friendly options. Shropshire Petals provide 100% biodegradable flower petal confetti, handpicked from our lovely family farm, and mixed to create the perfect addition to your wedding.

Be it one of our gorgeous Shropshire Boxes, equipped with 25 cones and filled with your chosen mix or maybe you're seeking a unique alternative like our fabulous Confetti Pops! You could even personalise this and choose your own bespoke confetti mix using our awesome Pick and Mix service.
