National Kissing Day

Today is National Kissing Day! This fun expression has so many descriptions including smooching, pecking, snogging or even playing tonsil-tennis! It's estimated 90% of the world's population kiss as a sign of affection and love, but why do we kiss?

The earliest recorded evidence of kissing is over 3,500 years ago from Hindu Vedic Sanskrit texts where kissing was described as inhaling each other's soul. On a lighter note researchers have found that kissing releases lots of feel-good chemicals in our bodies and helps to reduce stress and increase bonding with our partner. If that's not enough of a reason to kiss as often as possible, we don't know what is!

• The world's longest kiss took place in Thailand for 58 hours, 35 minutes and 58 seconds in 2013

• A typical French kiss moves 29 muscles in the face

• Your lips are 100 times more sensitive than the tips of your fingers

• One little kiss burns up to 3 calories. The longer the kiss... the better the exercise!

• Men who kiss their wives every morning before going to work live 5 years longer than men who don't

• An average person spends two weeks of his or her life kissing
