Wedding Superstitions

In 2015, we've been unlucky (or lucky depending on your beliefs) to have 3 Friday 13th's - yes, 3! For the majority of people, Friday 13th is something to be feared, and it's all to do with superstition.

Earlier on in the year (when we had our first Friday 13th) we had a look at some wedding superstitions and how they came about including veils, rain and something blue.

In today's blog, we're going to have a look at a few more....

We've all heard that it's bad luck to see each other before the wedding - brides and grooms will often part ways the day before and spend the night apart - but why?

Back in the day, brides and grooms were prohibited from seeing each other until the last minute so that the groom didn't have the chance to change his mind. The custom transformed into the idea that it was somehow unlucky for the groom to see his bride on their wedding day.

Today, brides and grooms stick to this because of tradition and the anticipation of seeing them for the first time at the alter, whereas some brides and grooms have breakfast together the morning of the wedding. We say, do it your way!

Don't choose yellow roses for your wedding day - or you'll be green with envy. This is one that I've (Jo) personally never heard before. In the Victorian era, a book that equated flowers with words and meanings was popularised all over Europe and according to this book, yellow roses supposedly represent jealousy.

Our view? If you love a flower, and it has a special meaning to you, ignore the Victorian's and their book! Flowers are very personal and you can give them your own special meaning.

If you catch the bouquet, you will be next to marry.

The tradition of the bride throwing the bouquet is said to have started in 14th century England. The guests, thinking a piece of the bride's clothing would bring good luck, would try and grab a piece of her clothing. To help preserve the dress, brides starting throwing their bouquet instead. We think it's a great tradition to carry on and a fab photo opportunity!

Wishing you all a very happy Friday 13th!
